The Count of Monte Cristo
Alexandre Dumas, Auguste Maquet
1844 Classic Literature
Genre
Adventure fiction of the nineteenth century was written for serial publication, so the chapters are short and almost every one ends on a turn. Stevenson, Dumas, London and Verne are the names most readers know; all of them are easier to read than their reputations suggest.
Where to start: Treasure Island and The Call of the Wild are short. The Count of Monte Cristo is enormous but moves quickly.
