Terms of use
Last updated: 2026-10-28
This page is a working draft prepared for the operator. Clauses marked [legal review] must be confirmed by a qualified adviser before launch.
1. The service
Open Shelf ("the site"), operated by Nicky Klendar, provides free access to public-domain books and to original editorial content. No account is required and no fee is charged.
2. Book texts
Book files are Project Gutenberg editions distributed under the Project Gutenberg License contained in each file. Your use of those files is governed by that licence. Public-domain status is assessed under United States law; you are responsible for checking the law of your own country before downloading or redistributing a work.
3. Editorial content
Introductions, biographies, guides, reading lists and the site design are the copyright of the operator. You may quote short passages with a link to the source page. Systematic copying, scraping or republication of editorial content is not permitted without written permission.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to use automated tools to download the site in bulk, to interfere with its operation, or to use it to distribute malware. If you need many files, Project Gutenberg's own mirrors are the appropriate source.
5. No warranty
The site is provided "as is". We take care over accuracy but cannot guarantee that every date, attribution or text is free of error. Editorial content is general information, not professional or legal advice.
6. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for any loss arising from use of the site or its files. [legal review] Align with mandatory consumer-protection rules in the operator's jurisdiction.
7. Rights complaints
See the takedown request page.
8. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States of America and, where state law applies, the laws of the state in which the operator is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes shall be brought in the courts of competent jurisdiction in the United States, unless mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence gives you the right to bring a claim elsewhere. [legal review] Name the specific state and county once the operator's legal address is fixed.
9. Changes
We may update these terms; the date above shows the current version.
