Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen
1813 Classic Literature
Genre
Romance in the public domain is rarely only about love. Austen writes about money and class, the Brontës about power and isolation, Hardy about chance and reputation. Expect slow-building relationships, sharp social observation and endings that are not always happy.
Where to start: Pride and Prejudice is the natural starting point; Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are darker and more demanding.
